Fancy Running Away to get Married?

Well… theres a way…….Elopements!

Ever wondered about the mysterious world of elopement weddings? Picture this: a whirlwind of romance, a hint of spontaneity, and a sprinkle of legality charm - that's the essence of elopements.

R&R had a viking ceremony in their back garden followed by a stroll through the woods.

But hold on a sec, how does this rebellious concept fit into the structured universe of traditional weddings? It's like mixing apples and oranges, right? Traditional weddings are all about the big shebang - think seating charts, cake trials, and more glitter than a unicorn parade. On the flip side, elopements are like a whispered secret, with just a handful of guests and minimal fuss.

Surprisingly, elopements offer the best of both worlds, letting you dance to your own beat. While planning a grand wedding can be a rollercoaster ride, elopements need their fair share of prep too. Picking the perfect spot, finalising the guest list, and adding personal touches are key to crafting your dream day without the overwhelm.

What is an elopement wedding?

An elopement used to mean sneaking off to get hitched in secret, but times have changed! Now, it's all about saying "I do" intimately with only a handful of loved ones or in a laid-back style.

Elopement weddings don’t need a ‘proper’ venue!

An elopement is like a choose-your-own-adventure book but for weddings! Picture tying the knot in a lush park, a cozy living room, or even under the stars on beautiful beach. Dreaming of saying "I do" with the ocean as your witness on the North Wales coast? How about exchanging vows with majestic mountains as your audience in the Lakes? Elopements let you pick the spot without breaking the bank on a fancy venue. Plus, with minimal setup, the world is your oyster when it comes to where you say your magical words.

Take R&R (above) who opted for an intimate legal ceremony (that I went along to as well) followed by an elopement style wedding in R’s parents back garden, surrounding by a gathering of their closest family and friends in a beautiful viking wedding ceremony! We all drank mead and the couple gave each other their rings on ceremonial daggers - then with me third wheeling we went off to the woods for some more ceremonial rituals…..and of course photos!

There’s no need to have an extensive guest list…

Some elopements are as cozy as a bear hug with just the couple, the celebrant, and the photographer doubling as the official witness. No need for a seating plan here - it's all about keeping it chill with the guest list!

But hey, you can also invite who you want to! Eloping is like a free pass to skip inviting your long-lost relatives and their circus of kids! Pick your squad, the ones who'll sprinkle your special day with love and joy - or just keep it chill... So yes, of course your parents can come, your Grandma, whoever, just make sure they’re fully with you, or get them to meet you afterwards if you’re ceremony is too much for them.

Not sure an elopement is for you but also don’t want a huge day? K&N had a ‘micro'-wedding’ at the gorgeous Hidden River Cabins, with just 6 of us (including me!) it was beautifully intimate… see my blog about micro weddings for more information.
